LANOTEC, the Nanotechnology National Laboratory of Costa Rica
Lanotec is a space for interdisciplinary research whose mission is scientific and technological development through the application of nanoscience and nanotechnology to solving problems, and the transfer of knowledge from the academic to industry.
The National Nanotechnology Laboratory of Costa Rica was inaugurated on August 31, 2004 and specializes in the research, design and implementation of technologies associated with nanotechnology, nanoscience and computational materials science.
Lanotec has an interdisciplinary team of researchers, an area director and a growing infrastructure.
Main areas of Research and Development at Lanotec are:
- Instrumentation and Characterization: This area is dedicated to the application of techniques and instruments to determine mechanical, thermal and electrical materials.
- Synthesis of Nanostructured Materials: Perform physical and chemical processes for obtaining molecular structures and materials with various features such as surfaces and nanoparticles.
- Computational Nanoscience: Work with the application of mathematical modeling and computer simulation to understand nanoscale phenomena and experimental development support.
- Bionanotechnology: Is the study of the characteristics and interactions of biomolecules and their applications through nanoscale manipulation techniques.
Facilities and Equipment
Lanotec provides the following resources to industry and university researchers:
- 300 m2 of laboratory space
- A clean room equipped for synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials
- A laboratory for the production of nanostructured materials and sample preparation.
- High performance computer resources for simulation and visualization of physicochemical phenomena.
In addition, Lanotec currently has equipment for Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), synthesis of carbon nanotubes and chemical laboratory equipment for sample preparation.
