The Nanobiotechnology Research Group at the UNAM (Bilkent University)
The UNAM (National Nanotechnology Research Center- Institute of Materials Science and Nanotechnology) is a national research facility and a center of excellence in nanotechnology that is part of Bilkent University in Turkey.
The UNAM carries out professional research targeting the development of new technologies and prototypes. It also trains experts through a multidisciplinary graduate program and develops new technologies based on nanoscience to strengthen the competitiveness of Turkish products in international markets and to contribute to the improvement of living standards in Turkey.
The Nanobiotechnology Research Group at the UNAM is a laboratory focused on the applications of molecular biology and genetics in nanobiotechnology. They collaborate with several groups from different scientific fields forming an interdisciplinary working environment for students and researchers.
Their interdisciplinary research areas include in vitro and in vivo analysis of the effects of nanofibers in collaboration with biomimetic materials group; identification of the genetic and molecular basis of neurological disorders in collaboration with human genetics groups; and the development of biosensors in collaboration with research groups working in electronics, physics and chemistry. They are also working on genetic manipulation and the selection of microorganisms in order to improve the current methods in sustainable technologies using biological materials.
Main research areas at the Nanobiotechnology Group include:
- Nanobiotechnology Applications in Regenerative Medicine
- Molecular Characterization of Receptor Modulation
- Nanobiotechnology Applications in Molecular Neuroscience
- Characterization of Biological Molecules in Animal Models
- Identification of Genetic and Molecular Basis of Neurological Disorders
- Biosensor Development
- Genetic Manipulation of Organisms for Developing Sustainable Technologies
The UNAM Nanobiotechnology Research Group is managed by Dr. Ayşe Begüm Tekinay who coordinates a group of 8 multidisciplinary researches.
