The “Rule-of-Three”
Through this section, Nanobugle tests the 3 main key success factors for the development of new nanotechnology/nanoscience companies in emerging countries.
This week: Italy

1) How was the company born?
Founded in 2003, Organic Spintronics is a spin-off company of the Institute for Nanostructured Materials Studies (ISMN), of the Italian National Research Council. Organic Spintronics does not only focus its research efforts on spintronics, but also in the development and commercialization of advanced nanomaterials, as well as tools and systems for thin film deposition.
Today OS is a fully privately owned company that maintains strong links with ISMN-CNR Bologna research laboratories, among the top European centers of excellence in nanotechnology.
OS retains complete Intellectual Property (IP) rights on the Pulsed Plasma Deposition (PPD), an innovative technology used in low cost ablation equipment for the fabrication of thin films. OS has developed fully in-house proprietary rights for the development of new PPD deposition processes for various applications in electronics, optoelectronics, mechanics, and more.
OS also possesses the principal IP assets on materials and processes for the development of a new branch of spintronics (i.e. organic spintronics) for the fabrication of devices based on the combination of colossal magneto resistance – CMR – materials, FM electrodes and organic semiconductors. This new area of science was invented at ISMN-Bologna by Prof. Carlo Taliani in 2002, who is also the OS majority shareholder.
2) Added value of the products/services
Organic Spintronics is actively engaged in the research and development, design, production and commercialization of technologies of:
- Innovative Thin Film deposition technologies and processes;
- Nanostructured Thin Film methods and diagnostics;
- Organic/inorganic spintronics
Os has developed a unique Thin Film fabrication technology, i.e. Pulsed Plasma Deposition (PPD), an innovative and low cost technology for the fabrication of inorganic Thin Films for optical, mechanical and electronic applications that exploits the benefits offered by organic semiconductors.
Having developed a novel approach to the use of organic semiconductors by achieving room temperature operation, OS is on the forefront of spintronics-based innovation for sensing applications.
3) Business Strategy
The name of the company reflects its origin since the PPD technology was instrumental in making colossal magnetoresistence thin films for spintronics. Since then, the PPD technology has become the major commercial asset of OS.
The company is also extending its future technological base through current R&D lines, which include innovative manufacturing systems for high performances nanostructured coating and thin films as well as the realization of nanostructured inorganic and organic/inorganic devices for spintronics.
