Institute for NanoScience and NanoTechnology at the Sharif University of Technology (Iran)
The Institute for NanoScience and NanoTechnology (INST) was established in 2005 as an independent center in the Sharif University of Technology after two years of study on its mission and organization. It includes faculty members from various departments: Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
INST is growing and has been declared a “Center of Excellence” (CoE) in the field of nanostructures from the beginning. In addition, the institute holds many international conferences and workshops on nanotechnology.
The goals of the Institute are to:
- Perform fundamental and applied research in nanoscience and nanotechnology
- Be a center of excellence with multidisciplinary knowledge and activities
- Act as a hub for nanotechnology research activities and strategy planning in the country
- Collaborate with international institutes for the advancement of applied and pure nanoscience
Main nanotechnology research lines at the INST include: the synthesis and study of polymer-based nanocomposites, biomedical applications of iron oxide nanoparticles for drug delivery systems (DDS), dye and quantum dot (QD) sensitized solar cells, hybrid LED using luminescent nanocrystals, models for computational nanomechanics or simulations of macromolecules and proteins in nano-scales.
From its foundation in 2005, INST has publish more than 200 research papers in international journals and is organizing the bi-annual international conference on Nanostructures and conducting general and specialized seminars on various fields of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology including Nanoparticles and Nanopowders, Coatings, Nanodevices, Nanocomputation and Modeling and Nanobiotechnology.
The Institute is in charge of the supervision of research projects supported by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology and Iranian Nanotechnology Initiative and the Ministry of Industries and Mines.
National and international collaborations are of great importance for INST. So far, the Institute has established an expansive network of experts in the fields of nanoscience and technology in several departments at Sharif University of Technology, Iranian national research centers and internationally renowned scholars, for example: IPM (Institute for Physics and Mathematics), ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics), EPFL, Uppsala University, etc.
