Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at the Cyprus University of Technology

The objective of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science is to become an international leader by establishing centres of excellence that will be involved in cutting-edge research and development and liaison with local and international industrial and educational partners.

The department aims to stay abreast of modern developments in the engineering field through on-going rigorous fundamental and applied research, consulting activities, and active participation in various academic and industrial forums.

The academic personnel of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science are currently developing infrastructure to serve as a strong foundation for high quality research into the latest technologies with the ultimate goal of generating new knowledge and promoting innovation. At the moment, the department has 10 scientists dedicated to research and development.

The faculty’s research and activities have driven the development of the research laboratories and centers, which can be divided into eight areas. These are key areas for the development of modern technology in the fields of materials, nanotechnology, biotechnology, energy, environment, mechanics and in general applied technology.

The following research lines are of particular interest for nanotechnology innovation:

Computational Materials Science and Engineering: Structural and electronic properties of crystalline and amorphous materials, tight-binding molecular dynamics, pseudo-potential density functional methods, statistical thermodynamics, optoelectronic properties of carbon materials, phase transitions, order-disorder phenomena, superlattices and heterostructures, modelling of construction materials, quantum dots, polymer nanocomposites, modeling of extended defects.

  1. Student says:

I am currently a student of CUT, and I have to say for a newly founded department, the ongoing progress of it is astonishing. Very bright professors, who of course are dedicated to research and are keen of passing their knowledge to us (the students).

Materials is a field of Science that in my opinion is very unpredictable and exotic. Chasing particles, Phase transformations, Kinetics, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics etc.

But nevertheless we are Mechanical Engineers with a new perspective.

I found this page via a google search. Bookmarked. Thanks!

  4. Much more doubt, mumble; while in trouble, delegate; while in charge, ponder.
The person who will use his skill and constructive imagination to determine how much they can give for any dollar, as opposed to how little he is able to give for the dollar, will succeed.
